Repression

Self-Produced Full-Length Album

About the album ‘Repression’
“A road trip from subconscious to the surface mind ”

Repression is a defense mechanism that “ensures that what is unacceptable to the conscious mind, and would if recalled arouse anxiety, is prevented from entering into it”

As a debut album, Mason Chiang aims to capture the pending, unresolved feeling of the past, digging into the subconscious side of mind. Regrets, anger, anxiety and melancholy, emotions that people tend to hide deep inside, are turned into soundscape constructed with hard-pounding drums and eccentric noises. Influenced by Skee Mask, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kiasmos, Tim Hecker and various artists, the album is full of dark, distorted synth, chopped drum samples, flickering noises and ambiences.

While his works in film scores are usually brighter and more accessible, the debut album shows that Mason Chiang is a versatile composer, who is capable of incorporating IDM, breakbeat, techno, classical music, ambient and noise into soundscapes that are abstract but deeply related to human’s inner mind.

People tends to avoid talking about dark, negative emotions, but to him, those wounds won’t be healed until we talk about it. He dedicates himself to exploring the diverse humanity among electronic sounds, creating music that heals himself and the audiences.
